2026 Tour de Houston: Post-Ride Reflection

Having fun on my new, used Trek Alpha 2.0, I was cycling the back half of the Tour de Houston, humming along when my back tire blew out.

A fellow rider stopped to help me. When I learned that replacing the tube would take time, I suggested he move along and I call a ride. He replied that as a Ride Marshall it is his job to help riders in need. I had not noticed he was wearing a marshal’s jersey.

After thanking Mr. John for his time and skill, I was back cruising.

My first bike blowout taught me how to change a tube. It also taught me that when you shift focus to fixing over lamenting in the thick of setbacks, you can be too distracted on the comeback to notice the setback.

The next time an abrupt challenge hits me, I will practice what I learned and call out my inner ride marshal.
